This report examines how European universities in each of the partner countries (EL, ES, FI, IE, IT) have implemented the provisions laid down in European documents, with particular emphasis on the use of digital technologies for lifelong learning, the establishment and assessment of quality standards and the professional development of teachers.<\/p>

This report also includes guidelines detailing a comprehensive research methodology to be used to investigate how digital technologies have been integrated into higher education. The National case studies examines the impact of digital technologies in higher education. This research report analyses six case studies in partner countries (EL, ES, FI, IE, 2IT) focusing on how universities are developing their strategic approaches to digitalisation. The comparative analysis extracts six development themes (clusters): (1) impact of digital innovation; (2) digital innovation strategies; (3) digital learning process; (4) digital innovation of higher education institutions; (5) impact of the pandemic on the teaching-learning experience; (6) international quality standards.<\/p>

ECOLHE’s findings show that HEIs should follow the good practices of advanced countries, adapted to their national policies within a coherent legal framework. They should focus on improving: digital skills of the academic community (both teaching and administrative staff); design of digital teaching and learning policies to support quality education; promotion of new teaching methods that enhance students’ digital skills; independence and self-discipline of students and teachers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The ECOLHE project partners, led by UOC and FLCU, developed and piloted an online training course divided into 2 integrated learning modules.<\/p>

The first module “Online teaching in HE” focused on updating the teaching skills of teachers and tutors to enable them to effectively integrate online and\/or blended technologies in HE.<\/p>

The second module “Engagement tools for HE online learning environment” focused on methodologies and tools to promote learner engagement in online and\/or blended learning activities in order to reduce digital drop-out rates and increase the effectiveness of teaching and learning processes.<\/p>

The ECOLHE project involved a pilot of the Symbiotic Learning Paradigm (SLP), to co-design a curriculum in all partner countries. SLP is a collaborative and learner-centred approach useful to design lifelong and life-wide learning opportunities in higher education. As an approach to curriculum design, SLP aims to bring the learner to the centre as a co-designer in the process, in collaboration with the teacher.<\/p>

The use of SLP is recommended in the curriculum design because it puts learners in the place of stakeholders in designing their curricula. It can provide a connection between HEIs and market needs and make students part of the design process, making courses more attractive to them, and that leads to the reduction of dropout course rates.<\/p>

Digital transformation in Higher Education (HE) is a major priority for the European Union (EU) and in the years to come there will be a reconstruction of the Higher Education Institutions (HEI) at all levels of their operation. With the adoption of the Digital Education Action Plan (2021- 2027) on 30 September 2020, the EU sets the target of a high-quality, accessible and inclusive digital education supporting the Member States for their entry into a digital era.<\/p>
